Posted: 06 Jan 2011 Hi Robert, Was this taken in the UK? I'm really no expert, but the best I can do for the butterfly is a Common Blue - though the colour is very vibrant, maybe due to the lighting and camera, and the white borders at the edges of the wings are very narrow. I think the caterpillar is a Large White. Regards, Tim. |

Hello Tim, thanks for the effort. Yes it was taken in the UK, down south. I think maybe you could have the caterpillar right, but, the Butterfly I think is an Adonis Blue, not a Common Blue. The Common Blue (see here) has a white fringe to its wings and is a lot paler. As you say, the blue in the original is a very deep and striking blue which is what they say about the Adonis, which also has a darker fringe to its wings. Funny the things you notice as you're sitting waiting for Adders to come out

Definitely Dave, that's a strong old word! Posted: 20 Jan 2011 Hi Robert Nice pic! Re the Adnois Blue - how big was the butterfly? Also - what type of habitat was it photographed in? Not convinced that it is adnois blue. Looks more like common blue, but you never know! cheers Hetty

Hi Hetty, The butterfly was about the same size as a Cabbage White, a touch smaller than a Red admiral. They were both in some scrubby marram/sandy grass at the rear of a large sand dune system. The thing is, with a common blue, wouldn't you expect that there would be some veins in black on the wings?? But there were at least three types of blue as well as a tiny small blue.
